🇵🇹 Bem, que excelente forma de começar o ano com uma leitura verdadeiramente original e inovadora.

Estamos perante um livro estranho e, à primeira vista, pouco apelativo. A capa diz-nos muito pouco sobre o que nos espera e, ao folheá-lo, a sensação de estranheza adensa-se ainda mais.

Este é um excelente exemplo do motivo pelo qual evito ler sinopses antes de iniciar um livro. Se o tivesse feito, teria perdido a tensão e a curiosidade em torno da aposta do protagonista — saber se seria bem-sucedido ou não — algo que a sinopse revela de forma demasiado explícita. Pode ser um pormenor irrelevante para muitos leitores, mas para mim é determinante na experiência de leitura.

Quanto à obra em si, foi uma surpresa total. É como se o autor, consciente das suas limitações ao nível do desenho tradicional, tivesse concebido uma forma alternativa de narrativa visual. Tudo é apresentado através de diagramas vistos de cima, com símbolos a representar pessoas, espaços e objectivos, numa abordagem extremamente inteligente e bem pensada.

Se a obra teria beneficiado de ilustrações tradicionais? Talvez. No entanto, a verdade é que a força da escrita e da história é tal que a ausência desse tipo de ilustração raramente se faz sentir. Pelo contrário, acabamos impressionados com a originalidade e eficácia desta solução narrativa.

Será que esta abordagem funcionaria novamente? Não tenho a certeza. Tenho algumas reservas. O factor surpresa é aqui absolutamente essencial. Embora consiga imaginar algo semelhante a funcionar numa eventual sequela — não necessariamente ligada a esta história — não creio que esta obra venha a alterar, de forma estrutural, a maneira como se fazem romances gráficos.

Em termos narrativos, acompanhamos a jornada de Simon, um miúdo que se vê envolvido numa espiral de acontecimentos que o obriga a crescer rapidamente e a confrontar-se com segredos ligados ao seu passado. A história é, sem dúvida, um dos grandes pontos fortes do livro e aquilo que sustenta o sucesso desta proposta visual pouco convencional.

Sem dúvida um dos grandes lançamentos de 2025, apesar de não ter tido a relevância e o reconhecimento que merecia.

🇬🇧 Well, what a great way to start the year with a truly original and innovative read.

This is a strange book and, at first glance, not particularly appealing. The cover says very little about what to expect and, when leafing through it, the sense of confusion only deepens.

This is a perfect example of why I avoid reading synopses before starting a book. Had I done so, I would have lost the tension and curiosity surrounding the protagonist’s bet — whether he would succeed or not — something the synopsis reveals far too openly. It may be a minor detail for many readers, but for me it is highly relevant to the reading experience.

As for the book itself, it completely surprised me. It feels as if the author, aware of not mastering traditional drawing, devised an alternative form of visual storytelling. Everything is conveyed through top-down diagrams, with symbols representing people, spaces and objectives, all executed in a remarkably intelligent way.

Would the work have benefited from traditional illustrations? Possibly. However, the strength of the writing and the story is such that the absence of that conventional approach is rarely felt. On the contrary, one ends up impressed by the originality and effectiveness of this narrative solution.

Would this approach work again? I am not entirely sure. I have my doubts. The element of surprise is absolutely crucial here. While I can imagine something similar working in a potential sequel — not necessarily tied to the same story — I do not believe this book will fundamentally change the way graphic novels are made.

Narratively, we follow the journey of Simon, a young boy who becomes caught in a spiral of events that force him to grow up quickly and to uncover secrets about his past. The story is undoubtedly one of the book’s greatest strengths and the key factor that allows this unconventional visual narrative to succeed.

Without a doubt, one of the major releases of 2025, despite not having received the recognition it truly deserved.
