🇵🇹 Já andava para ler esta obra desde que terminei “It’s Lonely at the Centre of the Earth”, da mesma autora. Confesso que estava à espera de gostar bem mais.

Em termos de direção artística, estilo e forma narrativa, continuo a achar que a Zoe é uma artista extremamente talentosa e única. No entanto, desta vez a história não me tocou da mesma forma.
Aqui seguimos Billie Scott, uma artista que, como tantas outras, luta com a sua criatividade — ou com a falta dela — e que descobre entretanto que está a ficar cega. Essa revelação empurra-a para uma jornada em que tenta aproveitar da melhor forma o tempo de visão que lhe resta.

À partida, parece uma excelente premissa, certo? Até nos faz refletir sobre o que faríamos na mesma situação. Adiamos tantas coisas que talvez fizéssemos imediatamente se soubéssemos que o tempo para as concretizar era limitado.

O problema, para mim, esteve na própria história. Depois de descobrir que vai perder a visão, Billie parte numa viagem onde encontra várias pessoas que a inspiram para o seu último trabalho — mas achei tudo isto muito desinteressante e não me identifiquei com nenhuma dessas figuras.

No geral, foi uma leitura difícil de digerir por falta de envolvimento com a narrativa, apesar de continuar a apreciar o talento da autora para a construção visual.

🇬🇧 I’d been meaning to read this book ever since I finished It’s Lonely at the Centre of the Earth, by the same author. I admit I was expecting to enjoy it much more.

In terms of artistic direction, style, and narrative approach, I still think Zoe is an extremely talented and unique artist. However, this time the story just didn’t resonate with me in the same way.

Here we follow Billie Scott, an artist who, like so many others, struggles with her creativity — or the lack of it — and who discovers she is gradually losing her sight. This revelation sends her on a journey where she tries to make the best use of the vision she has left.

At first glance, it seems like an excellent premise, right? It even makes us reflect on what we would do in the same situation. We postpone so many things that we might act on immediately if we knew our time to do them was limited.

My issue was with the story itself. After learning about her imminent blindness, Billie goes on a trip where she meets several people who inspire her final work — but I found all of this quite uninteresting, and I couldn’t connect with any of these characters.

Overall, it was a difficult read to digest due to my lack of engagement with the story, even though I still appreciate the author’s talent for visual storytelling.
