💭 My Thoughts:

🇵🇹 Junji Ito abriu as portas do Ocidente a inúmeros mangakás de horror, ajudando a consolidar o género fora do Japão. Entre os que ganharam destaque está Shintaro Kago, que rapidamente se tornou uma figura popular graças às suas narrativas macabras, onde ficção científica, erotismo e grotesco se entrelaçam numa coreografia perturbadora que poucos autores têm a capacidade — e a ousadia — de explorar.

Esta é apenas a minha segunda leitura de Shintaro Kago e, a esta altura, já é evidente que, do ponto de vista visual, o autor é brilhante. A composição, o detalhe e a expressividade gráfica são difíceis de criticar. Em termos narrativos, contudo, ainda não me conquistou por completo — embora nesta história curta, com menos de 30 páginas, esteja particularmente eficaz.

Para terem uma ideia do nível de grotesco e incorrecção política que caracteriza o seu trabalho, há aqui uma cena em que um fugitivo, no meio de um acto sexual, é surpreendido por uma perseguição policial e continua o acto sem nunca interromper o ritmo, mesmo enquanto tenta escapar.

Um momento absurdo, provocador e desconcertante — algo que só poderia emergir da mente deste mangaká singular.

🇬🇧 Junji Ito opened the doors of the Western market to numerous horror mangaka, helping to establish the genre beyond Japan. Among those who rose to prominence is Shintaro Kago, who quickly became a popular figure thanks to his macabre narratives, where science fiction, eroticism, and the grotesque intertwine in a disturbing choreography that few artists have the skill — and the audacity — to pursue.

This is only my second time reading Shintaro Kago, and by now it’s clear that, visually, he is brilliant. His composition, level of detail, and graphic expressiveness are difficult to fault. Narratively, however, he still hasn’t completely won me over — although in this short story, under 30 pages, he is particularly effective.

To give you a sense of the level of grotesque and political incorrectness that defines his work, there’s a scene here in which a fugitive, caught in the middle of a sexual act, is interrupted by a police pursuit and continues the act without ever breaking rhythm, even as he attempts to escape.

An absurd, provocative, and unsettling moment — something that could only come from the mind of this singular mangaka.
