💭 My Thoughts:

🇵🇹 Adoro ler obras destes dois autores — e quando se juntam, melhor ainda.

Aqui apresentam duas histórias completamente distintas, mas unidas por um mesmo fio condutor: a sede de vingança.

Na primeira, o racismo permanece profundamente enraizado num Estados Unidos pós-abolição da escravatura. Um avô parte em busca de justiça para a sua neta, numa narrativa pesada, onde a injustiça e o ódio se fazem sentir de forma crua e constante.

Na segunda, acompanhamos uma fora da lei cujas decisões conduzem a família à tragédia, ao mesmo tempo que tenta uma reconciliação com o filho — que, por sua vez, procura vingar-se do pai.

Tudo isto é apresentado com o inconfundível traço de Hermann: duro, sujo e cru, apoiado por uma paleta de cores igualmente sombria, que nunca se sobrepõe ao desenho, mas antes o reforça.

Em suma, duas histórias fantásticas. Tudo o que venha de Hermann e/ou Yves Huppen é sempre bem-vindo.

🇬🇧 I love reading works by these two authors — and when they come together, even better.

Here, they present two completely unrelated stories, both driven by a shared theme: a thirst for revenge.

In the first, racism remains deeply entrenched in a post-abolition United States. A grandfather sets out in search of justice for his granddaughter, in a heavy narrative where the injustice and hatred born of racism are constantly felt.

In the second, we follow an outlaw whose actions lead her family to ruin, while she simultaneously attempts to reconcile with her son — who, in turn, seeks revenge against his father.

All of this is delivered through Hermann’s unmistakable style: harsh, gritty, and raw, supported by a similarly muted and dirty colour palette that never overshadows the artwork, but rather enhances it.

In short, two fantastic stories. Anything from Hermann and/or Yves Huppen is always welcome in my book.
