🇵🇹 James Tynion IV é daqueles autores que tanto me impressiona como, noutras ocasiões, me deixa aquém das expectativas. Por isso, sempre que começo uma nova obra sua, parto com curiosidade e alguma reserva — mesmo quando, à partida, reúne todos os ingredientes para ser algo à minha medida.

Deviant é um thriller policial com uma forte componente psicológica e uma subtil camada de terror, muito bem escrito, narrado e ilustrado. Tecnicamente sólido e narrativamente envolvente — tudo aquilo que se procura num livro deste género.

Ao longo da obra acompanhamos várias personagens ligadas a um célebre caso de um assassino em série que utilizava a figura do Pai Natal como assinatura temática. Até à última página, a narrativa mantém a tensão em torno de quem é realmente o assassino e de que forma cada uma destas pessoas está implicada nos acontecimentos.

Gostei bastante. Agarrou-me do início ao fim, sem quebras de ritmo ou de interesse.

Por fim, um detalhe que raramente menciono — e que também raramente vejo acontecer: nesta obra, o letrista recebe crédito na capa. Não é habitual, mas aqui faz todo o sentido. A tipografia e o trabalho de lettering são absolutamente exemplares, elevando a atmosfera da narrativa e reforçando o tom sombrio da história. É, sem dúvida, das melhores experiências tipográficas que já tive em banda desenhada. Neste caso, o destaque é mais do que merecido.

🇬🇧 James Tynion IV is one of those authors who has greatly impressed me at times, but has also occasionally fallen short of my expectations. So whenever I start a new work by him, I approach it with both curiosity and a degree of caution — even when, on paper, it seems to have all the right ingredients for something I would enjoy.

Deviant is a crime thriller with a strong psychological component and a subtle layer of horror, very well written, narrated, and illustrated. Technically solid and narratively engaging — everything one looks for in this genre.

Throughout the book, we follow several characters connected to a notorious case involving a serial killer who used Santa Claus as his thematic signature. Up until the final page, the story sustains the tension around who the killer truly is and how each of these individuals is implicated in the events.

I enjoyed it a great deal. It held my attention from beginning to end, without losing momentum.

Finally, a detail I rarely mention — and one I also rarely see: in this book, the letterer receives credit on the cover. That is unusual, but here it makes perfect sense. The typography and lettering work are exemplary, enhancing the atmosphere and reinforcing the dark tone of the narrative. It is, without a doubt, one of the best typographic experiences I have had in comics. In this case, the prominence is fully deserved.
