🇵🇹 Parece que este autor tem um fraquinho por vigaristas — já é a segunda obra dele que leio com um trapaceiro no centro da história. Ainda assim, ao contrário do anterior, este vigarista tem uma natureza bastante menos gentil.

A narrativa é construída através de uma troca de cartas entre personagens, uma sucessão epistolar que vai revelando os acontecimentos. Supostamente, estas cartas foram encontradas mais tarde, mas a existência real do cavaleiro de Saint-Sauveur é motivo de debate. Terá mesmo existido ou será pura ficção? Para o efeito da história, pouco importa.

O mundo está cheio de vigaristas — pessoas que recorrem a artimanhas e esquemas para benefício próprio — e o cavaleiro de Saint-Sauveur é apenas mais um exemplo disso.

Gostei bastante da primeira parte da história. Sem entrar em spoilers, o seu primeiro golpe é engenhoso e surpreendeu-me até a mim. Já na segunda parte, vemo-lo a tentar ascender na corte real, mas aqui as coisas não lhe correm tão bem, e o desfecho deixa tudo em suspenso para o que virá a seguir.

É, sem dúvida, uma obra interessante e divertida. Devorei a primeira parte; a segunda não me cativou tanto, mas o conjunto tem potencial e estou curioso para ver como evolui.

Quanto à edição: irrepreensível. Um trabalho de altíssima qualidade, como a Ala dos Livros já nos habituou.

🇬🇧 It seems this author has a soft spot for swindlers — this is the second work of his I’ve read that centres on a con artist. Still, unlike the previous one, this swindler has a far less gentle nature.

The story is told through a series of letters exchanged between characters — an epistolary sequence that gradually reveals the events. These letters were supposedly discovered later, though the actual existence of the knight of Saint-Sauveur is up for debate. Was he real or fictional? It doesn’t really matter for the story itself.

The world is full of swindlers — people who use tricks and schemes for their own gain — and the knight of Saint-Sauveur is just one more.

I really enjoyed the first part of the story. Without giving away any spoilers, his first con is clever and even managed to surprise me. In the second part, we see him trying to gain influence at the royal court, but things don’t go as smoothly, and it all builds up to the ending of this first volume.

It’s definitely an interesting and entertaining read. I devoured the first part; the second didn’t grab me as much, but the overall work has promise, and I’m curious to see how it develops.

As for the edition itself: flawless. A top-quality production, as we’ve come to expect from Ala dos Livros.
