🇵🇹 Nesta obra, o autor apresenta-nos um conjunto de histórias curtas sobre os vários tipos de dor que têm assombrado a humanidade desde o início dos tempos. Explora-se não só a diversidade dessas dores, mas também as formas, por vezes absurdas, como ao longo da História aprendemos a lidar com elas — e é precisamente aí que entra o humor: no ridículo de algumas dessas abordagens.

Confesso que esperava uma obra que me fizesse rir mais. Para mim, não foi daquelas leituras de gargalhada fácil — longe disso. O tipo de humor aqui presente não é, talvez, o que mais me faz rir, pois muitas das histórias acabam por ser mais tristes, informativas ou até chocantes do que propriamente cómicas. No fundo, a forma como lidávamos com a dor era tantas vezes tão disparatada que se torna mais estúpida do que humorística.

E disse “informativas” porque sim, também se aprende bastante ao longo do livro.

Ainda assim, foi uma leitura interessante e agradável. Só lamento não me ter feito rir tanto quanto esperava.

🇬🇧 In this book, the author presents a collection of short stories about the various types of pain that have haunted humanity since the dawn of time. It explores not only the diversity of these pains but also the often absurd ways in which, throughout history, we’ve learned to cope with them — and it’s precisely there that the humour comes in: in the ridiculousness of some of these approaches.

I must admit I was expecting a book that would make me laugh more. For me, it wasn’t one of those laugh-out-loud reads — far from it. The type of humour presented here isn’t quite the kind that makes me laugh, as many of the stories end up being more sad, informative, or even shocking than truly funny. In the end, the ways we used to deal with pain were often so nonsensical that they come across as more stupid than humorous.

And I say “informative” because yes, you do learn a lot in the process.

Still, it was an enjoyable and engaging read. I just wish it had made me laugh more.
