💭 My Thoughts:

🇵🇹 Este livro faz-me lembrar bastante o “Portugal”, do Cyril Pedrosa, mas tem claramente a sua própria energia e charme.

A semelhança está no tema central: ambas as protagonistas embarcam numa viagem para se reconectarem com as suas raízes portuguesas. Mas aqui, Madeleine Pereira — a própria autora — assume o papel principal na narrativa. Viaja, conversa com familiares e amigos do pai, e vai juntando peças da vida dele e do passado de Portugal.

Fala sobre a vida durante a ditadura, as guerras coloniais, a forma como a sociedade via as mulheres e o seu papel naquela época, as vagas de migração para França, entre outros temas. No meio de tudo isto, a única pessoa de quem não consegue obter muita informação é o próprio pai — e acabará por perceber porquê.

Adoro o traço dela: cru, um pouco caótico, quase juvenil. Assenta na perfeição à história, dando-lhe um toque de intimidade e honestidade.

É uma leitura belíssima para refletir sobre o passado e tirar algo dele.

The similarity lies in the central theme: both protagonists embark on a journey to reconnect with their Portuguese roots. But here, Madeleine Pereira—the author herself—takes center stage as the main character. She travels, speaks with her father’s relatives and friends, and pieces together fragments of his life and Portugal’s past.

She touches on life under the dictatorship, the colonial wars, how society perceived women and their roles back then, and the migration waves to France. Yet, the one person she struggles to learn from is her own father—and eventually, she comes to understand why.

I love how her art feels raw, a bit messy, almost juvenile. It fits the story beautifully—adding a sense of intimacy and honesty.

This is a wonderful read to reflect on the past and take something from it.
