📚 Book Review: Varlot Soldado
📖 Author(s): Jacques Tardi, Didier Daeninckx
💭 My Thoughts:
— Aquiles
It Was the War of the Trenches”.

🇬🇧 I’ve mentioned this several times, but war has always fascinated me. It’s astounding how easily thousands of men can be sent off as cannon fodder, thrown into almost certain death in the name of the ideals of ruthless leaders who remain far from the battlefield, safe in the comfort of their command centres.
“Imagine a king who fights his own battles. Wouldn’t that be a sight?” — Achilles
Jacques Tardi’s “It Was the War of the Trenches” is, in my opinion, one of the most powerful graphic novels ever created to capture the horror of war and the terror of the battlefield.
“Varlot Soldado” feels like a condensed version of the themes explored in “It Was the War of the Trenches”. Although it was published later, this shorter story still conveys Tardi’s distinct perspective on war, its futility, its brutality, and the tragic toll it takes on those who endure it.
