📚 Book Review: Quando Nasce a Autoestima?
📖 Author(s): Regiane Braz, Jefferson Costa
💭 My Thoughts:

🇬🇧 Why can’t each person simply be themselves, free from the constant oppression of what is considered “normal”? From an early age, we grow up in environments where we are slowly shaped by words and attitudes that carve into us, almost like a chisel against stone.
It’s easy to be vibrant and confident when you’ve always been accepted for who you are. But what happens when that isn’t the case? When genetics have “cursed” you with traits that fall outside what others consider normal and, because of that, make you less accepted by your peers? That changes everything.
This book specifically explores how skin color brings prejudice with it, and how that prejudice ends up shaping a person from a very young age. That is exactly what happens to Bia, our young Black protagonist, who grows up in an environment where her characteristics are constantly used to belittle and humiliate her. The words and situations she is forced to endure simply for being who she is are genuinely disgusting, and they left me deeply angry as a reader. No child deserves to grow up in an environment like that.
According to the author, this work has a strong autobiographical element and, although it is centered on racism, it is impossible not to see parallels with other forms of prejudice that also leave lasting marks on us while growing up.
A very important work that reminds us that words carry weight and that, many times, they can be more violent than physical aggression. The body may heal, but the mind rarely forgets.
