🇵🇹 Há leituras que desconhecíamos por completo e que, quando finalmente chegam até nós, se revelam um prazer indescritível. Esta obra é um desses casos.

“A vida é como um jogo de xadrez.” — este é o mote da narrativa. O autor traça aqui um paralelismo entre as regras e movimentos das peças do jogo e as diferentes personagens que vai apresentando, cada uma com a sua personalidade e desafios pessoais. Tudo acontece enquanto uma idosa, residente num lar, procura ensinar xadrez ao jovem protagonista. No final, percebe-se que a lição vai muito além das regras do tabuleiro: trata-se, na verdade, de uma lição sobre a própria vida.

O enredo é envolvente e mantém-nos presos do início ao fim. Comecei a leitura com a intenção de avançar apenas “mais um capítulo” e só consegui parar depois de o ter terminado por completo. É o tipo de livro que nos enriquece, ao mostrar tantas experiências humanas que se cruzam e interligam, levando-nos a refletir sobre o papel do destino e como, por vezes, ele nos coloca exatamente onde precisamos de estar.

A Ala dos Livros brinda-nos, assim, com mais uma obra memorável, de um autor que já nos tinha oferecido “O Mergulho” — mas desta vez em nome próprio.

Uma leitura que recomendo vivamente.

🇬🇧 There are books we don’t even know exist, and when they finally reach us, they turn out to be an indescribable pleasure. This work is one of those cases.

“Life is like a game of chess.” — this is the guiding motto of the narrative. The author draws a parallel between the rules and movements of the pieces and the different characters he introduces, each with their own personality and personal challenges. All of this unfolds while an elderly woman, living in a nursing home, tries to teach chess to the young protagonist. In the end, however, the lesson goes far beyond the board: it becomes a lesson about life itself.

The plot is engaging and keeps us hooked from beginning to end. I began with the intention of reading just “one more chapter” and only managed to stop after finishing the whole book. It’s the kind of story that enriches us, by showing so many human experiences intersecting and intertwining, making us reflect on the role of destiny and how it sometimes places us exactly where we need to be.

Ala dos Livros once again presents us with a remarkable work, from an author who had already given us “Le Plongeon” — but this time entirely on his own.

A book I highly recommend.
