📚 Book Review: Dark Crusade – A Cruzada Negra
📖 Author(s): Jorge Rodrigues
💭 My Thoughts:

🇬🇧 Jorge completed this work over 20 years ago, and when you compare it with one of his most recent titles, “Abril, Cravos Mil: Histórias de Liberdade”, his artistic evolution is immediately clear. He is now far more skilled at filling panels, experimenting with different angles, and creating dynamic, fluid sequences.
As for “Dark Crusade” itself, it is an imaginative blend of Portuguese history and dark fantasy. The story features iconic historical figures, including D. Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal, as he battles demonic forces. But that is only one layer of the story. It also draws on the history of the Iberian Peninsula, with the Moors represented by their own powerful champion, among other historical elements.
The tone of the story is not overly serious. In fact, there are plenty of moments that feel intentionally, or perhaps unintentionally, playful. The narrative is straightforward, perhaps even a little juvenile at times, which suggests that it may be better suited to a younger audience.
The illustrations are the real highlight, with vivid colours that enhance the dark fantasy atmosphere. However, they are still a long way from the level of detail and refinement Jorge achieves in his current work.
All things considered, “Dark Crusade” is a respectable early effort from an artist who was only beginning his journey in comics. I’m glad to have this piece of Portuguese comics history in my collection.
